MAN SENTENCED TO EIGHT MONTHS IN PRISON AFTER SLASHING A MAN ACROSS THE THROAT WITH A BOX CUTTER

A man who slashed a man across the throat with a box cutter over money was yesterday sentenced to eight months in prison.

Gregory Sweeting, 46, of First Street, The Grove, pleaded guilty to causing grievous bodily harm to Raymond Joseph at his arraignment before Deputy Chief Magistrate Andrew Forbes.

Joseph told police that Sweeting approached him on East Street around 11:50 a.m. on December 6 and asked him for money.

When Joseph told Sweeting that he didn’t have any cash, Sweeting pulled out a box cutter and cut his neck, before he shouted, “One Order World,” the court heard.

Police arrested Sweeting and he admitted to the offense.

Sweeting, who was unrepresented, told the magistrate that he had taken alcohol and prescription medication prior to the incident.

However, Forbes told Sweeting that drunkenness was not a defense.

The magistrate told Sweeting that he was fortunate that Joseph’s injuries weren’t more severe as he could have faced either an attempted murder or murder charge.

Taking into account of the circumstances, the magistrate imposed a sentence of eight months.
